I: Efficacy of aquatic-based exercise training versus land-based exercise training in the lactic acid threshold of sedentary college students

I have always wanted my thesis/research topic to be relevant to society, which is why I chose this topic because it tackles on the increasing risk of obesity in the Philippines. The topic is also under exercise physiology, one of my most favorite subjects in sports science. Obesity is an emerging health problem in the Philippines because of certain detrimental factors: unhealthy eating caused by the constant increase of fast food chain branches, lack of exercise most especially among young adult Filipinos, stress from either work, school, or personal life namely are just some of the factors that affect the increasing health problem in the Philippines. Lack of exercise among young adult Filipinos is prevalent most especially in the academe, where students and professors alike are constantly on the go. Most of the college student’s spare time usually involve partying and/or hanging out with friends as a form of stress reliever. Some never even bother to exercise because of lack of motivation and the fact that they could do other fun and exciting things aside from sweating and experiencing pain in the body. With those things in mind, I thought about making exercise fun and exciting for young adults so that they would really set a time for exercise and maybe invite their friends in the future.

The beach and swimming are two things that most people, in general, look forward to every vacation. These are the two things that people brand as fun and exciting, which is why I thought of incorporating one common factor that these two things have: water. Aquatic exercise is an emerging topic in the field of research. New studies on rehabilitative exercise showed that injured elite athletes have been open to doing aquatic-based training as a part of their rehabilitative training program. There are also sports science researchers that have delved the realm of aquatic training as a form of treatment on the movement patterns of people with disability. The water has certain properties that makes it an effective tool for rehabilitation. One physical property of water is its hydrostatic pressure, where it could be used to reduce effusion meaning it enables the athlete to exercise an injured part of the body without an increase in the escape of a fluid from anatomical vessels by rupture. The water also exhibits drag and resistance properties when people wade or move through it, which may be an effective tool for exercising. Not only does the water provide fun and exciting activities for people, in general, but it also exhibits certain properties that may be an effective tool for tackling on the increasing health problem in the Philippines.

I’m hoping that with this research topic, I would be able to come up with different fun, exciting, and effective aquatic workouts that would make college students want to exercise more frequently. Since an increase in lactic acid threshold is my objective, I would be conducting short high intensity interval exercises.
